Two-week Fresco Painting Workshop
                                                                                                       with Alma Ortolan


The Fresco Painting workshop concentrates on art materials, technique, motif design and art conservation, combining a creative learning experience while taking advantage of the rich artistic heritage and stunning landscape that the Veneto Region has to offer.

The class includes a series of creative activities and art classes followed by a demonstrations and Guided Art Tours. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the technique of  the architectural fresco decoration - from the traditional preparatory drawings, mortar mixing and application, and the use of natural pigments to painting on terracotta tiles, which makes an original and Authentic Italian Gift for your friends and family!

This Workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Fresco Painting and several Faux Finishes techniques, from the complete beginner to the professional artist.

Instructor 
Alma Ortolan is an Italian Art Conservator and Educator. She has been teaching fresco painting conservation at the University Ca’ Foscari Venezia.

She studied Painting Conservation in Florence, Rome, Venice and Cracow. At ICCROM She completed her education in Conservation of Architectural Façades in 1998. She has carried out a wide range of prestigious Heritage Conservation Projects which include the Grand Opera House La Fenice in Venice, the Early Christian Fresco Painting in several Roman Catacomb and numerous historical buildings and fine art pieces.

She is the author of a variety of scientific publications and has presented her work at various institutions throughout Europe and the United States, including Columbia University, Historic Preservation Dept. in New York, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, and the University of Colorado, in Denver. 
Workshop agenda
Week 1. Exploring ornamental motif design and the materials and surfaces for fresco painting. Basic knowledge of traditional mural ornaments gaining inspiration from the Renaissance architecture which surrounds the studio and our rare Art Book Collection.
After the  Creation of your own design you will begin your journey of painting! Experimenting with raw earth pigments, chalk paint, marmorino, lime washes, faux finishes, vintage finishes, old patinas, marble effects and stencils.
Week 2.  Application of the techniques learned during the first week will be exercised and used to enable you to develop your own selected Art Project under the guidance of our art instructors. 

Level of Ability:
This Workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Fresco Painting and several faux finishes techniques, from the complete beginner to the professional artist.

The workshop includes
  • 9 full days of instructions, demonstration and hands-on 
  • 13 nights stay
  • A guided tour of Venice, Treviso and Serravalle in Vittorio Veneto 
  • Most meals, including daily wine tasting opportunities, coffee/tea and snacks with the exception of the one-day tour in Treviso
  • Venice/Treviso airport transfer and local transportation.
Cost 
  • The all-inclusive price including art supplies, accommodation, most meals and tours is  EUR 2650 per person
  • 25% reduction for non painting partners.
Extra costs
  • Single room supplement: EUR 490
  • Meals during the one day tour in Treviso and Venice.
Accommodation
  • Guests will stay at at Palazzo Galletti B&B Boutique Hotel on a first come, first choice basis or in the nearby hotel

  • Personal expenses and some meals 
  • Fees for private car rentals, taxis, etc. (Bus and taxi service or car rentals are available upon request).
